Learning and Adapting as an Exchange Student in Sweden

Stepping into a new country as a student is more than a change of scenery. It is an immersion into a different way of thinking, learning, and living. For many students, an exchange programme represents a defining chapter in their academic journey, one that challenges assumptions and expands horizons in unexpected ways.

For this student, the decision to pursue an exchange program was driven by a desire to experience education beyond familiar boundaries. A spring semester exchange (January–July) at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has not only built on the strong academic foundation gained at Strathmore University but has also provided an opportunity to engage with a different academic system, culture, and community. The motivation was to explore new perspectives and grow both intellectually and personally.

A Leap into the Unknown

Pursuing studies in computing, the exchange offers exposure to an academic ecosystem shaped by innovation, research, and global collaboration. KTH provides an environment where technical depth meets real-world application, pushing learning beyond the classroom.

The first days in Stockholm were a blend of curiosity and adjustment. The city operates with quiet efficiency. Public transport runs seamlessly, systems are structured, and communication is direct. At the same time, subtle cultural differences quickly emerge.

One particularly memorable moment was attempting casual small talk with a stranger at a bus stop, only to be met with polite confusion and a respectful step back. In Sweden, silence is not awkward; it is normal. It becomes clear, quite quickly, that “mind your own business” is not just a phrase; it is a lifestyle.

A Different Academic World

One of the most transformative aspects of the exchange was the academic environment. The shift from Strathmore University is immediate and significant. The learning model emphasises independence, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Lectures introduce concepts, but mastery depends on self-driven exploration, research, and application.

Collaboration takes on a global dimension. Working in multicultural teams exposes students to diverse viewpoints, enriching discussions and making solutions more nuanced. Ideas are challenged openly, and questioning is encouraged, creating an environment where learning is both interactive and dynamic.

Access to advanced tools, modern development frameworks, and well-equipped labs enhances this experience. Project-based coursework bridges theory and practice, ensuring that learning remains relevant and applicable.

Navigating Challenges

No meaningful experience comes without its challenges. Adjusting to a new academic system while simultaneously navigating a different culture required resilience. The most significant challenges were balancing academic and social expectations while adapting to unfamiliar norms.

Over time, these challenges become growth opportunities. By developing new routines, seeking support when needed, staying proactive, and maintaining an open mindset, the transition was made smoother. What once felt unfamiliar gradually became part of a new normal.

A Day in the Life

A typical day blends structure and flexibility. Mornings are often dedicated to lectures or lab sessions, followed by independent study or group work. Evenings and weekends offer space to explore Stockholm’s scenic landscapes, participate in student initiatives such as KTH Innovation, go to the gym, play basketball, connect with peers, or simply unwind. The emphasis on work-life balance is evident. Productivity is important, but so is well-being.

Culture Beyond the Classroom

Swedish culture introduces a distinct rhythm of life, one characterised by punctuality, structure, deep respect for personal space, and a strong sense of community responsibility. While subtle at first, these differences became more apparent over time.

Building relationships required initiative, but once formed, they were meaningful. Collaborations with fellow students, both local and international, have created a network that extends beyond the classroom. These interactions have enriched not only my academic understanding but also my global awareness.

Growth in Real Time

This exchange experience is actively shaping both my academic and personal development. It has strengthened my problem-solving abilities, fostered independence, and broadened my perspectives on both education and career possibilities.

More importantly, it reinforced my confidence and my ability to step into unfamiliar spaces, navigate uncertainty, and emerge stronger.

Looking Ahead

The most impactful moments are not only found in lecture halls or project milestones, but in everyday experiences, shared conversations, cultural exchanges, small victories and the quiet realisation of personal growth.

For students considering an exchange programme, the approach is simple. Engage fully. Step beyond comfort zones, embrace new perspectives, and remain open to growth in all its forms.

An exchange programme becomes a lens that continues to shape how one learns, connects, and interprets the world.
