In today’s digital age, data has quickly become one of our most valuable assets. Its vast potential unlocks endless opportunities but also presents complex challenges. Just as a powerful tool requires careful handling, so too does the data we gather and share. Regardless of its size, every piece of data demands thoughtful management, and the responsibility to protect it lies with each of us. Understanding its value and the risks involved is critical.
To address this growing need, Strathmore University’s School of Computing and Engineering Sciences (SCES), in collaboration with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) and GIZ Kenya, launched a month-long Data Protection Certification training. Open to both staff and external participants, this program was designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to manage and safeguard data effectively in an increasingly connected world.
On November 20th, 2024, Strathmore University proudly celebrated the graduation of those who successfully completed the certification. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as the graduates, dressed in their yellow regalia, eagerly looked ahead to apply their new expertise in the field of data protection. Dr. Eng. Julius Butime, Dean of SCES, congratulated the graduates and urged them to continue expanding their qualifications and advancing their careers. He highlighted the vital role data protection plays in securing personal information from loss, damage, or misuse. Dr. Butime stressed the importance of upholding ethical standards and safeguarding individual rights, encouraging the graduates to carry forward Strathmore’s values as they make their mark in the professional world.

As technology evolves, Dr. Vincent Omwenga, a key speaker at the ceremony, urged the graduates to embrace digital platforms in decision-making processes. He challenged them to take the lead in strengthening the country’s data protection systems, fostering a society grounded in ethical practices, transparency, and trust. The graduates, he emphasized, have the power to drive meaningful change.
The field of data protection also intersects with growing sectors such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, opening doors to even more opportunities. Mr. John Walubengo, a data protection lecturer, expressed his pride in seeing his students graduate, acknowledging Strathmore’s significant role in raising awareness of the Data Protection Act. He stressed the importance of ensuring citizens understand their privacy rights—whether in schools, hospitals, or banks—and holding service providers accountable for upholding those rights.
Tevin Gitonga, a former Strathmore student and GIZ employee, shared his excitement about the graduates’ potential to make a lasting societal impact. Reflecting on GIZ’s support for the program, he was proud to see the graduates step forward, ready to contribute to the digital transformation and safeguard data in today’s evolving landscape.
Congratulations to all the graduates! You are poised for greatness. #KeepWinning and #GoPlacesWithSU
