23 Aug Strathmore University Elevates Two to Associate Professors
Strathmore University is proud to announce the promotion of Dr. Vincent Omwenga and Dr. Bernard Shibwabo Kasamani to the rank of Associate Professor. These two distinguished scholars, both hailing from the School of Computing and Engineering Sciences (SCES), have made significant contributions to the University and the broader academic community.
Prof. Vincent Omwenga, a seasoned academic and consultant with a rich tapestry of experience in ICT for Development, has been elevated to Associate Professor in Data Science and Analytics. He brings over 20 years of academic and research experience, coupled with more than 15 years of consulting expertise in ICT for Development (ICT4D).
His extensive background includes strategic development, artificial intelligence, statistical computing, system dynamics, software engineering, and project management. As a Senior Lecturer and former Director of Research and Postgraduate Programmes at SCES, he has played a pivotal role in the development of advanced curricula, including the Master of Science in Spectrum Management and the Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Sciences. With 31 peer-reviewed journal articles, 4 conference proceedings, and 10 conference/workshop articles to his name, Prof. Omwenga has significantly contributed to enhancing Strathmore University’s research profile.
Similarly, Prof. Shibwabo Kasamani, now an Associate Professor in Applied Computing, has been a driving force behind several key initiatives at SCES. His leadership as Director of Graduate Studies since 2019, along with his previous roles as Director of Research & Graduate Programmes, and Academic Director, has been instrumental in the development of the PhD in Computer Science curriculum and the establishment of the Sustainable and Assistive Intelligence Lab (SAIL).
A leader in the Computational Sustainability research group, Prof. Shibwabo has also been a passionate advocate for Challenge-Driven Education (CDE), a method he champions for its strong connection to innovation, student experience, sustainability, design, and societal impact. His commitment to design research is further demonstrated through his active membership in the Design Society and his role as a Steering Committee Member of AFRICA-DESIGN.
In a ceremony hosted by the School of Computing and Engineering Sciences, Professors Omwenga and Shibwabo expressed their gratitude to the faculty and staff who have supported them throughout their academic careers. The duo, renowned for their unwavering dedication to advancing research, vowed to continue pushing the boundaries of knowledge in their respective fields. “Though much is given, much is expected,” Prof. Omwenga remarked, underscoring their resolve to elevate the research endeavors of the school.
During the ceremony, Prof. Izael Da Silva, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Research and Innovation, emphasised the significance of their promotion, noting that it not only strengthens the Strathmore University brand but also aligns with the University’s pillar of service to society. “Use the title to be agents of change and make an impact in society,” Prof. Da Silva urged, encapsulating the expectations placed upon these new academic leaders.
Both professors have demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to academic excellence. Their promotions are a testament to their hard work, dedication, and invaluable contributions to Strathmore University. As they embark on this new chapter, the University, through the Management Board, is confident that they will continue to inspire and lead the next generation of scholars and innovators.
