Professor Ismail Ateya Lukandu is a distinguished Kenyan academic and researcher in the fields of computer science and information systems. He currently serves as the Director of the Office of Faculty Affairs and is a Professor at the School of Computing and Engineering Sciences at Strathmore University in Nairobi.
Prof. Lukandu holds a Doctor of Science (D.Sc., 2003) and a Master of Science (M.Sc., 2000) from Kyoto University in Japan. He also earned a Graduate Diploma in Computer Science from the University of Auckland, New Zealand (2006), and a Bachelor of Science (Honours, 1993) from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. His academic journey reflects his deep-rooted interest in applied computing and cross-cultural learning in global academic environments.
Prof. Ateya’s research interests lie at the intersection of information systems, logical data modeling, systems thinking, health informatics, and geospatial technologies, including GIS and spatial analysis. He has led and participated in numerous research projects, consultancies, and cross-sector collaborations with both public and private entities. His scholarly contributions—spanning journal articles, book chapters, and technical reports—focus on applying ICT4D (Information and Communication Technologies for Development) to address real-world challenges in health, agriculture, and manufacturing. A key theme in his work is the use of data-driven approaches and ICT integration to inform public policy and enhance decision-making in complex systems.
As a principal investigator and research leader, he has contributed to high-impact projects such as the implementation of ICT tools in Kenya’s manufacturing sector, the mapping of industrial symbiosis opportunities, and several health data informatics initiatives. His work has informed national strategies on digital transformation and innovation.
He has also supervised over 150 master’s theses and several Ph.D. dissertations, reflecting his commitment to mentoring the next generation of scholars. He is passionate about nurturing the next generation of African scholars and researchers, particularly in emerging fields such as health data science, e-government systems, and sustainable information infrastructure. He has also served as External Examiner and Reviewer for several universities and journals, and he is actively engaged in curriculum development and academic policy formulation. His contributions to scholarly work are indexed in platforms like ResearchGate, Google Scholar, and the AD Scientific Index.
