About Course

The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science (PhD CS) programme is designed to develop Computer Science leaders as vigorous professionals of a sus­tainable, ethical, social economic development of society. The PhD in Computer Science students will acquire research capability to advance the­ory, knowledge and skills required in the society in relation to Computer Science. The Students in this program learn through interaction with the industry experts how to see the world from a real-life computing setup so as to achieve enterprise-level solutions that en­able an organization’s business processes to func­tion

This PhD programme therefore targets the mid­dle and senior level professionals in the field of computing who aim at sharpening their skills and knowledge towards becoming world-class pro­fessionals in research and managerial positions. It equips the individuals with skills and knowledge for purposes of addressing current societal chal­lenges. By offering the course, the demand for experts in the growing field of computing can be adequately addressed.

A candidate for the PhD in Computer Science degree will be required to complete all the pre­scribed coursework, and practical assignments for each of the course Units. The award of the PhD degree in Computer Science will be based on the assessment of the candidate’s passing a total of seven (7) taught courses, the Thesis and publica­tions.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science (PhD CS) is offered starting May/September every year.

Mode of Delivery

Modular: Classes run three times in a year in a Modular fashion.

Entry Requirements

The candidate must be a holder of the following three qualifications:

  1. Holders of a Master of Science in Computer Science, MSc. Information Technology or equivalent from an institution recognized by the Academic Council of Strathmore University, and
  2. The candidate must be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, BSc. Information Technology or equivalent from an institution recognized by the Academic Council of Strathmore University.
  3. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, BSc. Information Technology or equivalent from recognised universities. The qualification must be in any of the following three categories:
    1. Holders of First Class (or GPA of 3.45 – 4) or Upper Second Class Honours (or GPA of 2.85–3.44)   degrees in a Computer Science, IT or related discipline from recognised universities or;
    2. Holders of Lower Second Class degrees or at least 2.5 GPA plus:
      1. Postgraduate Diplomas or Certificates, in computer science or IT.
      2. At least two years of working experience from the day of graduation.
    3. In addition, the applicant must have obtained the minimum university entry requirement i.e. scored at least a C+ in their KCSE (or its equivalent).
Admission Process:

If the applicant meets the above entry requirements, they are then invited to sit an Entrance Interview. All applicants MUST sit and pass our entrance Interview that comprises of a Concept note presentation by the applicant to a panel of interviewers. Once the applicant has completed the interview, they are notified of the outcome.

NB: Applicants are encouraged to make their applications early before the next intake so as to complete the admission process in time. 

Admission Requirements

To apply for PhD studies, the following documents should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies.

  1. One copy of the fully completed application form (Download the form here).
  2. A signed updated Curriculum Vitae. Please use the Europass CV template (http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu).
  3. Two (2) completed Reference Forms from former undergraduate/graduate professors particularly qualified to attest to the applicant’s qualification for graduate study (Download here).
  4. Certified copies of both undergraduate and Master’s degree certificates and transcripts of records (TOR) in English giving full details of subjects studied and grades/marks obtained.
  5. A certified copy of your Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education-KCSE certificate (Secondary/High School Certificate or its equivalent).
  6. Two (2) current passport size photos.
  7. A copy of National Identity Card (ID) or a copy of Passport (bio-data page).
  8. A copy of the research work undertaken at Master’s level.
  9. A concept note of what you would like to research. The concept should be clear on:
  • What your research problem is
  • Why it is important to study that area
  • The research gaps
  • Your contribution to knowledge – new knowledge areas as well as originality in your proposed study area
  • How you intend to undertake the study
  1. (If available) Names of at least two proposed supervisors one of whom one must be a Strathmore University staff member. The other(s) can be from any accredited Kenyan university or outside Kenya.

NB: Certified copies: Please note the copies of the certificates and transcripts should be certified by the awarding institution or by an advocate of the high court.

Once the application is received and verified, eligible applicants will be required to pay a non-refundable interview fee of KShs 6,000/.

Fees and Funding

The programme fee is Kshs 1,725,100 which is payable over the three (3) years of the programme).  PS: the fees may change in a given academic year.
