Dr. Bernard Shibwabo

Senior Lecturer

BSc. Business Information Technology, MSc. Information Technology, PhD Information Technology (Deriving a Transparent Dataspace-Oriented Entity Collaborative Infrastructure)

Dr. Bernard Shibwabo earned his doctoral degree at Strathmore University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Information Technology and a Master of Science in Information Technology from Strathmore University.

 

His Doctoral studies was funded jointly by the National Council for Science and Technology under the Science, Technology and Innovations (ST & I) Grant and Strathmore University. He has also had multiple research projects, consultancies, and collaborations with the public and private sectors. He continues to spearhead the Computational Sustainability research group and coordinates Challenge-driven Education (CDE) in the University and with global partners, an approach that he is very passionate with considering its strong interface with innovation, sustainability, design and societal impact. As part of CDE, he has guided various projects to completion through the application of Design Thinking, a process that he has facilitated various training programmes on. He is an active member of the Design Society and a Steering Committee Member of AFRICA-DESIGN, a Design Society initiative to build a network of design researchers, educators, and practitioners based in African countries and beyond, with particular emphasis on design for sustainable development; and to link them with colleagues in the worldwide design community. He is a 1st Dan Blackbelt and has won major titles in national competitions. 

 

Dr. Bernard Shibwabo has previously worked directly with Swift Global (K) Ltd., Virtual Solutions, Strathmore Research and Consultancy Center and has been in continuous collaboration with major industry players in providing solutions to real societal challenges, particularly through the application of Design Thinking. He has overseen the successful implementation of numerous solutions across different areas including Healthcare, Legal, Educational and Tourism settings.

 

Dr. Bernard Shibwabo has vast practical experience in Programming,  Web Technologies and Database environments  including: C#, C, C++, PHP, VB .Net, Java, Perl, Python, J2ME, Android, XML, PHP, AJAX, HTML, CSS, ASP, VBScript, CGI, SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, MS Access, SQL Server, SQL CE, Sun Solaris, Red Hat Linux, IBM AIX, HP UX, Debian, IoT (including Raspberry Pi, Arduino, LoRa etc.)   among others. His Research interests include Computational sustainability, Databases and Business Intelligence, Dataspaces, Programming, Ubiquitous context-aware personalized services, Semantic data and ontology, Algorithms and Image processing among others.

 

Dr. Shibwabo has been teaching and training: Design Thinking, Challenge Driven Education, Programming, Software Development, Secure programming, Embedded Systems and IoT, Multimedia Applications, Server Administration, Data Structures and Algorithms, Databases, Service Oriented Architecture, Mobile Applications Development, Knowledge Based Systems, Research Methodology, Thesis & Dissertation Supervision among other courses/programmes.

 

Prior to his current position, he served as the Director of Research and Postgraduate Studies in the School of Computing & Engineering Sciences (formerly Faculty of Information Technology). He is currently the Director of Graduate Studies at Strathmore University.
